Variable Message Sign (Mobile Matrix Road Sign)
Roadside Technologies supplies a number of different
variable message signs:

One of the earlier parts of the
Littlewood Hire group , Roadside Rentals, had been supplying portable and
mobile speed display systems, and variable message signs (matrix road signs)
for some time. Roadside Technologies has now taken over the mantle, still
within the Littlewood Hire group, and has significantly broadened its range
of products. Many are sourced from Wanco, on of the USA's leading
manufacturers.
The Highways Agency has recently revised the allowable size of variable
message signs for Motorways to enable mobile signs of this size and nature to
be used.
In addition to highways use, these signs are also used by Airports - for
example for welcome and security changes, and by Supermarkets - for offers
and directions
Variable Message Sign - Full
Shown to the left is the large mobile variable message sign display unit:
- This is a self-contained message display system, capable of displaying almost any message or displaying the speed of an oncoming vehicle
- Each line contains eight 13" x 18" LED alphanumeric characters
- Easy set-up reduces man-hours required – set-up from towing position to working position takes one man less than 5 minutes
- With the display unit being self-contained, it can be set up and left to work unattended almost indefinitely. The solar panel and built in charger maintain battery levels for sustained operation.

The Highways Agency require that the messages displayed on mobile variable message signs conforms to the same rules as the fixed signs. Only autorised legends may be used.
In addition, the variable message sign may be used for other purposes, for example, in Airports for welcome messages, security messages, etc.
Variable Message Sign - Mini
The functionality of this unit is similar to the Full Variable Message Sign described above, but with a smaller display. Overall 30% smaller than the full sized unit.

Variable Matrix Sign - Full
Again, the functionality is similar to the Variable message sign except that the whole display area may be used to display matrix images, for example direction arrows, in addition to text.

A 30% smaller version of the full Variable Matrix Sign
